J has been named the official "hero" of the local high school. Where's his medal?
He needed to buy a graphing calculator for his math class this quarter. He looked online and at stores, and finally found one on Craigslist for $60. The seller was a high school student who said that he had 2 of them. J met up with the kid and from the beginning had a strange feeling about the whole thing, like the calculator was stolen. But the kid had an answer for everything - the etching on it was done by his mom, his name was Sam Ward (to match the initials on the etching) even though his e-mail address listed a different name... When J got home he looked more closely at it and saw that the kid had tried to scratch the etching out. It just wasn't right.
So J looked up the adminstration's website and e-mailed the principal and the 2 vice-principals. He said that he had just purchased a calculator from one of their students and he thinks it might be stolen. He's not sure of the student's name (since he may have lied about it), but he looked the kid up on Myspace, and though the profile was private, the picture matched. If he's wrong, then he's really sorry.
The vice-principal wrote him back, saying that they do have a student with the name that matched the e-mail address. She said that the yellow graphing calculators are only used in schools (special editions) and that the parents put on a fundraiser to get the money to buy those very calculators for low-income students. She notified the boy's parents, who agreed to bring J's $60 back to the high school the next day. She sent an e-mail out to the teachers, saying that my J was a hero, who knew to do the right thing, and that he is a great example (of course!).
The police called J today. The boy only admitted to stealing 1 calculator, but the Craigslist ad that J had taken a screenshot of said that he had 2 available. I'm sure that the boy will just be suspended - not like he's going to juvenile or something. Just thought he could make a fast buck. Little did he know that his potential buyer had such integrity.
p.s.
J found another calculator (not stolen) for only $50 a day later.
